The 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly began Aug. 5 at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee, meeting through Aug. 10. Day one consisted of opening worship and the first plenary session, at which the election of the presiding bishop by ecclesiastical ballot began. At the opening of plenary session two on Aug. 6, ELCA Secretary Chris Boerger reported that the first ballot for presiding bishop was invalid due to an earlier invalid vote on bylaws, and that the vote would be held again.
