Making Room: A Lenten Series

Week of March 23—making room for joy

While many people traditionally observe Lent through acts of self-denial, this year we are shifting the way we think. Rather than giving something up, we encourage you to join us in making room for something else. This week, we are making room for joy.

PRACTICE: Make a tiny joy journal. This could be as simple as a folded-up piece of paper you carry in your pocket this week, or it could be a notebook you reflect in. When you experience a spark of joy, no matter how big or small, record it in your joy journal by writing it down, making a doodle, or anything that will help you remember it.

FOCAL VERSE: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

PRAYER: In the Christian church, Easter is not one day but a season of fifty days. During this time we explore the many ways God raises us up to new life. In a world where death threatens people on all sides, we declare that God is the God of life who has conquered death in Jesus Christ. We are invited to participate in Christ’s death and resurrection, and to lean into our hope that one day, by God’s grace, we will stand among God’s resurrected people and see God face to face.

The fifty days were once called Pentecost, Greek for “fifty.” We end this sacred time caught up in God’s transforming Spirit that breaks down divisions and sends us out to accompany Jesus in tending and mending the world.

REFLECTION: At the end of this week, look back on your joy journal, whatever form it exists in. Remind yourself of all the small moments of joy you encountered and normally would have forgotten about. As this Lenten series comes to a close, bring these practices with you in your life, and find ways to make room for restful moments, allow yourself to be imperfect, take opportunities to show compassion, and don’t forget to notice sparks of joy when they cross your path.

Table Prayer for the Season of Easter

O God, you raised Jesus to new life by the power of your Holy Spirit.

Wherever we encounter pain or death, send your Spirit with signs of your liberating life.

May this food we share

strengthen us to be Christ’s body alive in the world.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
