Carmencita Martinez and Roberto Lara Aranda share personal reflections on faith, leadership and belonging in the ELCA.

As part of Living Lutheran’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, these conversations offer a glimpse into the diverse ways in which Latiné leaders are shaping the life of the church—through service, storytelling and advocacy. Martinez, president of her congregation council, speaks about the joy she finds in mentoring others and nurturing their faith. “There’s no greater fulfillment for me than being present for others when they need it most,” she said. “Sharing God’s word and infinite love becomes a vital mission.” Her story highlights the power of showing up for community and guiding others through Scripture and care.

Lara Aranda offers insight into his multifaceted leadership across the ELCA, from liturgical dance to national advocacy. “What I enjoy most in all of these roles is being able to amplify voices that are often marginalized and to remind our church of the beauty and necessity of every person’s gift,” he shared. In addition to recommending the book See Me, Believe Me by Yolanda Denson-Byers, Roberto invited readers to join its accompanying virtual book study on Thursdays, 9-10 a.m. Pacific Time/12–1 p.m. Eastern Time, Sept. 4 through Oct. 9.
