Praying for and honoring our nonbinary siblings

Today, we give thanks for our nonbinary siblings as we continue to celebrate Pride Month and honor the diversity of God’s people.

Prayer: God, who transcends all genders and identities, we remember Matthew 25:40, where you remind us that how we treat the vulnerable reflects how we treat you. In a world that often chooses violence over compassion, we pray for safety for individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community who are so often made vulnerable. Inspire us to be bearers of grace and peace. Move us toward care through action by respecting the names and pronouns people share with us, advocating for justice and equity, and helping us to honor the sacred humanity of those in our lives.

Scripture: “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40).

Journal prompts:

  • Take time to reflect on at least three meaningful ways you can help create more inclusive and respectful spaces for people in your community.
  • Reflect on a time when listening to someone’s experience changed your perspective. What did you learn?

Find articles authored by LGBTQIA+ church leaders and stories about ministries that affirm people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in Living Lutheran magazine and on LivingLutheran.org. Visit here to receive the quarterly print magazine.

“Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust” expresses ELCA teaching on human sexuality. A social statement is a teaching and policy document that assists us in thinking about and discussing social issues in the context of faith and society. This statement was adopted in 2009 and provides guidance on such matters as marriage, family and same-gender relationships.
